NEWS:  SW Radio Africa (London):  2009 Academic Year in Zimbabwe Under Threat As Schools Likely to Remain Closed.  Zimbabwe's education sector has not been spared in the total collapse of the country, and it's believed that less than 20% of the country's children received schooling last year. The attendance number is once again expected to drop, this time dramatically, as thousands of children and their families are still battling the humanitarian crisis, that has left untold thousands dead from disease and starvation. . complete story

NEWS:  AP:  Zimbabwe economic collapse challenges aid workers.  Aid workers in interviews this week described having to bring in everything from soap to medical equipment. Even the cash to pay Zimbabwean staff comes from abroad. A bar of soap, essential for the cleanliness needed to stop cholera, was selling for $1 in Zimbabwe on Friday, about half a gardener's monthly salary. complete story

NEWS:  Genetically Modified Mosquito "could fight malaria" A genetically modified (GM) strain of malaria-resistant mosquito has been created that is better able to survive than disease-carrying insects.  It gives new impetus to one strategy for controlling the disease: introduce the GM insects into wild populations in the hope that they will take over.  The insect carries a gene that prevents infection by the malaria parasite. complete story

NEWS:  UN Calls for Female–Focused Strategies Against HIV/Aids.  The Zimbabwe Country Report of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Task Force on Women, Girls and HIV/Aids in Southern Africa announced startling news, including the fact that in Zimbabwe, young women in the 15-24 age group account for more than three quarters of HIV infections.   complete story

NEWS:  Zimbabwe's inflation rate slowsBusiness Day reported Zimbabwe's annual inflation rate slowed slightly to 602.5% in February from 622.8% in January.  complete story

NEWS:  Zimbabwe defenseless as health delivery system collapses.  NewsFromAfrica reported an outbreak of cholera in villages outside Binga, a small town in north-western Zimbabwe, in January has exposed the present state of affairs of the country health delivery system.   complete story

NEWS: Over half of all Zimbabweans, some 7.5 million people, are now in need of food aid, a rise of two million in the past year.  complete story

NEWS:  Sub-Saharan Africa is home to over 29.4 million people living with HIV/AIDS.  Approximately 3.5 million new infections occurred there in 2002, while the epidemic claimed the lives of an estimated 2.4 million Africans in the past year. Ten million young people (aged 15-24) and almost 3 million children under 15 are living with HIV. -UNAIDS
